Natural blue tanzanite crystals of this size
and quality are rare and highly desirable. When viewed head on, this
fine piece is a bright, translucent cornflower blue, with an overtone
of purple when turned sideways. The luster is quite glassy, and the
light flashes brightly off the striations on the sides of the crystal.
The termination is perfect on this natural, untreated gem crystal.

Locality
Information
about crystals/mineral specimens from this location
Here's
a 100% natural, untreated crystal of TANZANITE. The color is
outstanding - a vibrant cornflower blue that is luminous and riveting.
When turned to the side, the color changes to a fascinating violet purple-blue
hue, due
to the phenomenon of dichroism. This
is a superb example of a tanzanite crystal for the size and price. It
was mined in the local miners' concession at Merelani Hills, Umba Valley,
Lelatema Mountains, Arusha Region, Tanzania. I
am always on the lookout for high quality, reasonably priced tanzanite
crystals. Naturally I was delighted to discover this and a few other
good ones at
the Tucson Gem, Rock & Mineral Show in
the room of a dealer who visits Tanzania several times a year.
Mineralogy
Facts
about gems, rocks and minerals
Tanzanite
is relatively new on the gemstone market, but has left its mark. Its blue-lavender
color is rather unique and a wonderful addition to the gemstone palette. Found
in Tanzania (hence the name) in 1967, it has since become a well known and widely
distributed gemstone. It has better fire than the tourmaline elbaite
or peridot and an adequate hardness. Its only one direction of cleavage is somewhat
of a problem because it is oriented with the direction of strongest pleochroism.
This would be a problem in most gemstones because that is the direction the gemcutter
would usually select to maximize the color. However, with tanzanite the color
is usually strong enough anyway. Pleochroism
is very pronounced in tanzanite and is seen as three different color shades in
the same stone. In the viewing a tanzanite stone, the colors dark blue, green-yellow
and red-purple can be seen, all a result of pleochroism. Lesser stones may have
a brownish color due to the mixing of blue, purple and green. In many crystals,
the color change is seen as only two colors: cornflower blue and purple blue (in
which case, this characteristic is called dichrosim). These stones are usually
heat treated to a deep blue color. Iolite is a blue-violet gemstone variety of
the mineral cordierite, has strong pleochroism and can be confused with tanzanite.
However, iolite is usually less strongly colored, its pleochroic colors vary from
blue-violet to yellowish gray to blue and it has less fire. Iolite's unusual color
shades makes it an exotic colored gemstone whose popularity is growing day by
day.Recent
changes in the tanzanite mines in Tanzania will greatly impact future prices of
specimen-quality crystals. In Merlani there are 3 tanzanite concessions which
have been leased by the governemnt (these are the only known source of tanzanite
in the world). Two of these are now controlled by a huge South African mining
company, which is only after the gemstones and is not currently interested in
the specimen-quality material. They have consolidated the 2 claims and are mining
with the largest mining equipment available (pneumatic drills, 12-yard bucket
loaders, enormous mining trucks, etc.). The mine-run ore is all shipped to South
Africa, where it is sorted and graded and turned into gemstones. It is still not
clear what they do with the specimen-quality material, but currently it is not
available. The third concession is reserved for the local miners, who have been
working the ground since 1967. Unfortunately, these mines have reached a depth
of over 300 meters, and are no longer profitable to operate using primitive hand-mining
methods. So, the local miners, who have always been the best source for crystals,
have quit working the deposit. Together, these recent developments have choked
off the supply of specimen-quality crystals almost entirely. Unless the South
Africans change their policies, we can expect the cost of tanzanite to skyrocket
in the near future.
Metaphysics
Information
about crystal, gem and mineral metaphysics and healing
People
interested in metaphysics and crystal healing tell us that tanzanite helps to
bring together all aspects of both communication and psychic power, allowing the
user to to effectively communicate visions. It can be used to stimulate the crown
chakra to produce visions of the higher spiritual realms. It is a stone of magic,
producing the perfect symmetry of personal power and actualization. It can be
used to assist one in encountering the different aspects of the self.
